The Studio

The studio at Spencer Brook glass studio is an efficient modern glass shop, equipped the best tools and equipment. The building has large barn doors, which allow for natural lighting in warm weather.

The hot shop has a 275 lb. Day tank and melts Spruce Pine Batch # 87 with Texas sand. It has a very large glory hole with a tracked yoke, which will allow for making the biggest pieces you can think of. There are two, fiber blanket annealers which have, 28 x 48 inches interiors, (depth x width), and are 12 and 18 inches high. Color is heated in a 20 x 26 x 8 inch pick up oven. There is a large marver and a small, heated pick up marver. The bench has two torches and compressed air available and is stocked with a great set of jacks, shears, optic molds, and other hand tools.

The cold shop has a large flattening wheel, drum sanders, felt wheels, a diamond lathe, reciprocating grinders, and a large sandblaster.

Students are not asked to use “student tools and pipes”, but rather use the same tools that I use. They also have access to large supply of overlay color in rods, canes, stick, murini, frits, and powders.

Beginning Glass Blowing

Taking a class at Spencer Brook Studio is unlike other schools and is a top of line experience. Class size is limited to ten students and may have as few as five. I have been blowing glass for 30 years and do all the instruction, myself. I supervise you and work with you the entire time you are here. (A four-day class has 32 hours of instructor contact time). My studio is your studio. You use the same tools and have access to the same quality materials that I use in my own work.

The Beginning Glass Blowing Class is a four-day, intensive introduction to the design and execution of glass vessels. It is intended to give students, collectors, or others interested in glass blowing, a basic exposure to and opportunity to learn the skills involved in designing and making simple glass vassals. It offers students the opportunity to see if glass blowing is something they wish to pursue at the college level. It offers glass collectors the opportunity to get a sense of just what goes into those pieces of art that they treasure. (A number of former students have been given High School or College credit for taking the course. You are given a letter explaining the class to take to your school, but whether you get credit or not, is up to your school.)

It meets form 8:00AM until 4:00PM, on Saturday and Sunday on two successive weekends. Students learn the basic skills in making small glass vassals as well as basic approaches to designing glass vassals and objects. They work in groups and individually under my close supervision and with my help. My approach to teaching is to insure that students will experience success early in the process, which I believe builds confidence and contributes to further success. Students will also have the opportunity to design pieces somewhat beyond their own abilities to make and have the opportunity to make those pieces as part of a team, working with me.

Intermediate Glass Blowing

Intermediate Glass Blowing is a follow on to Beginning Glass Blowing and is intended for students who have taken the beginning class and want more. Intermediate students meet with the beginners although the tasks they perform are somewhat different depending upon their skill level. The tuition and terms are the same with the exception that Intermediate students will have the opportunity to purchase additional, un-supervised studio time.
